Greening Your Spring Cleaning

In spite of the weather (April showers, anyone?) we had a great time at
CPRC's first Greening Your Spring Cleaning Workshop at Cheverly Town Park Pavillion, April 19th. We hope to do more of these events in the future, so if you're interested in getting involved, let us know.

Many thanks to Aimee Olivo for all her hard work. Download a recipe page for safer, environmentally friendly products.

Families Building Peace

The workshops were a great success. Thanks to everyone who joined us for our first series. We'll plan additional workshops soon. Learn more here.

Interested in volunteering with CPRC?

We're beginning to search for people to fill several cooridnator positions for next year. Please e-mail lead coordinators Jan or Cindy. Get involved! CPRC is a community effort . We rely on theideas and efforts of all of our members. Several officer positions will be open next year -- please contact Jan or Cindy for information.

Super CPRC!

Cheverly Day is May 17! We're planning to host a very special DIY-kids activity: Superheroes of Tomorrow! Children ages seven and under will (with a little help) be able to create their very own superheroes.

This is where you come in -- we need volunteers to staff the table and help those pint-size artists create their masterpieces (or alter-egos!)

If you can volunteer an hour or two (or know a teenager who can), please contact Jan.

Playgroup

Playgroup now meets Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, 9:30-11:30am, at Gast "Cheese" Park in good weather (over 65 degrees) or at the Community Center Gym in cooler or inclement weather.

By popular demand, we're also back to our very loose Weekend playgroup! Please join us on Sundays, 3:00-5:00pm, at Gast "Cheese" Park in good weather.

Playgroup details (places, times) are sent out over our playgroup listserv, please contact new playgroup coordinator Patti for more information.

Scholarship

CPRC is proud to announce our new scholarship fund. We offer scholarships to elementary school-aged children to participate in extracurricular programs. Scholarships will be awarded by a committee, with decisions based on a combination of merit and financial need.

Click here for an application or contact Caroline Jarboe (scholarship@cheverlyparent.org) for additional information.

We're also looking for volunteers with experience in grant writing to help build our scholarship fund. Interested? E-mail Caroline.

A Look Back at Cheverly Parents Resource Center Events from 2007-2008...

Arbor Day

CPRC celebrated Earth Day and Arbor Day a few days early. We planted trees in Cheverly’s Gast Park (actually, the great guys in Cheverly's Public Works staff planted the trees...we just mulched and watered.) Many, many thanks to Pepco Arborist Nathan McElroy and Cheverly Public Works Director Juan L. Torres for all their work. About a dozen new beautiful trees have been added to Gast Park, thanks to donations from Pepco, Prince George’s County Forestry Board, and the Maryland Urban and Community Forest Committee (MUCFC) to plant trees in Cheverly’s Gast Park. In addition to tree planting, environmental information and trees were given to families who came out to help on this very special morning. More photos are posted on our flickr page.

View the event flyer here.

International Children's Book Day Celebration

Our first International Children's Book Day Celebration was a great success. Thanks to all who worked and all who attended! We had over 50 people join CPRC at the Community Center on April 1 to read, make bookmarks, swap books, and listen to Cheverly author Loretta Ford, co-author of Bridget "Biddy" Mason: A Walking Sensation. Pictures are posted on our flickr page...here are just a few. Loretta Ford reading her book Making Bookmarks

CPRC Families in the Arts Night

Families in the Arts Night
About 65 people turned out last week to join CPRC for our first Families in the Arts Night benefit. Special thanks to Cindy Popol, who coordinated the evening, as well as Beth McCracken-Harness for her curatorial work, Tammie Nelson for coordinating poetry and Charles Andrews and Kelly Fisher for the great music. We all had a great time and Artmosphere Café was packed for the full two hours! Proceeds from this evening will help CPRC establish a new scholarship fund which will provide opportunities for children from low income families to participate in community activities, such as Boys & Girls Club, scouts, CYAG, and camps. If you would like to learn more or get involved with this event, please e-mail scholarship@cheverlyparent.org.

Additional photos are on our flickr group page. If you'd like to add your photos from any CPRC-related event, please join!
