PG County may end sibling preference for enrollment in ESPs

The PG county school board is considering putting to an end automatic sibling enrollment in Enrichment and Specialty Programs (ESPs). Currently, if one child wins (through the lottery) a spot in an ESP, siblings are also allowed to attend. This allows families to send all their children to one school.

The PG Board of Education has not yet voted to change current regulations. They are entertaining a suggestion to "grandfather" in families with children currently in an ESP, but change practices for incoming families.

Also under consideration:

  • Removing ESP teachers' option to enroll their children into the ESP where they teach
  • Limiting French Immersion entrance through examination
  • Capping wait lists at fifty (which will effectively hide the total unmet demand for programs)

ESPs include Hoyer Montessori and French Immersion.
